AMLJIA Welcomes New Members

The AMLJIA is pleased to welcome three new members in FY 2018. The Boreal Sun Charter School, a new school within the Fairbanks North Star Borough School District, blends the Waldorf philosophy with traditional public school standards and goals. Boreal Sun Charter School will include Kindergarten through 7th grade for the 2017-2018 instructional year, with the addition of 8th grade for the 2018-2019 school year.

The City of Sand Point, located within the Aleutians East Borough, lies on Popof Island on the eastern portion of the Aleutian Chain. The city is home to the largest fleet of commercial fishing vessels in the Aleutian region, and fishing activities are an integral part of the culture and community. Nearly half the population is of Aleut descent, mainly from the Qagan Tayagungin Tribe.

The City of Valdez, incorporated in 1901, was originally a debarkation point for gold seekers headed to the Eagle Mining District and the Klondike goldfields. Following completion of the Trans Alaska Pipeline, Valdez became the largest crude oil port in North America. The city’s average annual snowfall of 360 inches (30 feet) is the most of any community at sea level in North America.
